National Year of Reading 2026

Happy New Year, and what a year it is going to be!

National Year of Reading is a campaign right up my street, it’s the message I have been trying to get across for so long. There is a steep decline in reading enjoyment among children, young people and adults and hopefully this year could be the start of change.

I have loved books since childhood, escaping into a story was magical for me. As long as it had a ‘happy ever after’ ending! I have continued on my reading journey throughout my life, with my choice of genre adapting and expanding during the years.

I have many years of experience working in a primary school setting supporting dyslexic pupils and am fully aware that for some reading is difficult.

There is melting pot within schools of children ranging from book worms to reluctant readers but also everyone in-between. How they view reading and words is started from an early age, is it seen as a:

chore/ homework/ boring/ not for them

or

fun/ relevant to them/ inspiring/ attainable ……..

The campaigns tag line is ‘Go All in….’

For everyone to Go All In on THEIR interest and passions through reading. The message being that fun comes first (reading should be enjoyable) and to access those words YOUR way! Be it a football programme, comic, audiobook, recipe, song lyrics, game instructions etc….

This year is packed with events and celebrations https://goallin.org.uk/whats-on/

I have signed up to be a National Year of Reading Champion and am looking forward to hopefully helping in a small way in changing the perception of words for some of the more reluctant readers out there. But also to encourage the current bookworms to continue on their ever changing and expanding journey of curiosity and create a lifelong passion for reading in whatever way they wish (just like I continue to do).

If you have any comments or wish to get involved in this years’ revolution please feel free to message me. Let’s see what magic happens this year……
